The speaker of “Her Kind” is a woman who in some way feels she doesn’t fit the accepted social norms. Through her accounts of historical women, the speaker expresses her solidarity with oppressed minority identities and her disinclination towards traditional gender roles. She identifies with women who have dared to live outside the constraints of society and were ostracized or punished for it. The speaker acknowledges her otherness while carrying a sort of pride for it, claiming she is “not ashamed” of her way of living (Line 20). Through her experiences, she encourages the reader to question the structures that society has given them.
