Leila
Leila is the central character of "Her First Ball." She has traveled from her home in the country to spend time with her cousins, the Sheridan siblings, in the city. While there, she attends her first dance. Leila knows how to dance but is unfamiliar with the majesty and grandeur of the social ball culture. At first, she is ashamed of her excitement, wishing she could be indifferent like everyone else seems to be. But once she arrives at the ball, she is in awe over the decor, the people, and the dancing experience. She quickly realizes that her dance partners are not so giddy, and even becomes briefly disheartened by the words of an older fat man who makes her think about old age. Ultimately, however, Leila's youth prevails, and she is able to enjoy the novelty of the evening despite others' jaded behavior.
