Summary
The men approach the women from the other side of the dance hall. A few men come up to Meg and Leila and write on their programs. One man is an older fat man with whom Leila does not particularly want to engage, but he writes something on her program and says, "Do I remember this bright little face? Is it known to me of yore?" (3). He disappears as the music starts and everyone begins dancing.
Leila remembers that she learned to dane during her time at boarding school. They instructor, Miss Eccles, would poke the girls' feet as they danced. She thinks that the music and atmosphere of the ball is so wonderful that she will die if her dancing partner does not come to her.
