Virgil's House
Virgil lives with his parents, brothers, and Lola. The scenes in Virgil’s house are important because they illustrate his transformation. At the beginning of the narrative he does not feel as if he fits in with his family. While they talk and laugh with each other, Virgil is quite. His brothers are athletic, but he is not. His parents call him Turtle because he is like a turtle in that he stays in his shell. When he returns home after his ordeal in the well, readers realize he is different as he now sees his home as a bright and comforting place for the first time.
