Summary
In Chapter 17, “Going Underground,” which is narrated from Virgil’s perspective, Virgil looks into the darkness of the well and thinks of Pah, a bird Lola had told him about who uses the power of darkness to make men weak and confused to catch and eat them. Even though Virgil is scared, he sees a ladder going into the well. After taking the stones out of his pocket, he descends into the well and sees his backpack. The ladder does not go all the way to the bottom of the well, so he lets go and jumps. His phone breaks when he hits the ground. He gets Gulliver and finds out that he is okay. Then he looks up and yells hello to try to get someone’s attention even though he does not think anyone is there or can hear him even...
