Hell of a Book
The first person narrator's novel Hell of a Book is a symbol of repetition. Because the novel has the same name of Mott's novel, the project is an inherent redundancy of another preexisting text. The novel's elements also overlap with elements from the narrator's, Soot's, and The Kid's lives. In this way, the narrator's novel enacts the author's exploration regarding the Black experience, the cycle of oppression in the United States, and the ways in which the collective identity informs the individual's identity.
The Kid
The Kid's character is a symbol of innocence. Because The Kid is also the young Black boy who is killed by a cop, his character is a representation of all the Black innocents who have lost their lives to senseless police violence.
