Summary

The narrator's book tour takes him from the Midwest to the West Coast. He has felt disoriented throughout his trip. After "a wild night with a woman from Colorado," he feels hungover (58). At the airport, he meets his driver, Renny. Renny has read Hell of a Book, and compliments the narrator.

In the back of the limousine, The Kid appears. The narrator confirms with Renny that they are the only people in the car. He puts up the partition and talks to The Kid. The Kid insists that the only reason Renny cannot see him is because he does not want him to see him. The narrator still thinks he is "not real" (63). Then they talk about reality and imagination. The narrator explains his condition and his therapist's theory. The Kid says the narrator is "not crazy" because he is not imaginary (64).
