Summary
Chapter VII takes place in Sceaux, France in 1910. A French woman named Lia walked into the forest outside the city to gather wood for her fire. She thought about her husband whom she loved very much and who had recently died. In the forest, she saw a photographer. The photographer invited her to set down with him. They had a conversation about photography, life and grief. The photographer showed Lia some of his photographs. He explained that the length of time the exposures take means that anything that is moving doesn’t appear in the photograph. Only still things appear. Lia fell asleep. When she woke up, she decided she would invite the photographer to come home with her but he had already left. The photographer had given her a photograph of the city and filled her kindling bag with wood before...
