Eyes

Eyes is the name all the bullies use for the narrator and main character of the novel, and no one ever says his real name. He is 14-years-old, and his world consists of time with his stepmother (identified only as Mom) and school, where he is bullied mercilessly. Eyes believes he has been targeted because of his lazy eye. He is pushed to consider that the bullies have no moral compass and do not see anything wrong with what they are doing. Eyes struggles to decide if that could be true and if right and wrong are secondary to what one wants to do and is capable of carrying out. When he tries to defend Kojima near the end of the novel, he discovers that he cannot strike someone else, even when that person is terrorizing Eyes' only friend.
