Summary
In 1992, Mack travels to Penn State with Rena, who is bringing her son Calvin on a campus visit. Rena is hopeful that the campus tour will convince Calvin to attend college, and she walks at the front of the tour group, right next to the guide. Mack surveys the campus and remembers when she was a student, beating up a boy behind the gym before fleeing school. Calvin, Mack notices, walks toward the back, listening to a visiting father discuss his latest business successes in pharmaceutical sales.
Mack watches Calvin interact with the parent, the businessman, and wonders why he is not kind or gracious or engaged when he talks with Mack or Rena. Then she remembers the farthest acres of the farm, separated from the rest of the land, where Calvin planted fields of marijuana. Luckily, a neighbor noticed and let Mack...
