Chapter 3 Summary
Spencer and her parents are in their house looking out into their ruined backyard. The fire destroyed the woods, their windmill and their law. Further destruction came from the emergency vehicles driving on the lawn and the spectators traipsing over it. The 18th century barn apartment is also in ruins from the fire and the rest from the water damage from the firemen trying to douse the fire.
Spencer's parents are gushing over her, which is unusual for them. Even though Spencer is enjoying their unusual attention, she admits that she found out that she is adopted. She also tells them that she met her birth mother and wanted to go live with her in New York City.
