Chapter 1 Summary

Emily Fields wakes up in the grass with smoke and fire all around her. Her other friends are coming out of the woods too. The paramedics, cops and news reporters are rushing over to the girls. Emily is thinking about the text messages the girls have been receiving from someone with the initial A. the mysterious texter suggests that the cops investigating Ali's murder are the ones responsible for killing her but that they set Ian Thomas as the killer.

As the paramedics are working on the girls, Emily tells them to help Alison because she's hurt. When Emily points to where Alison was, she's gone. The reporters hear what Emily says about Alison and start asking the girls and the cops questions. They get each of the girls into an ambulance. Emily looks out the ambulance window as it drives her away...
