Summary
Chapter 9: Catherine and Mary Ann visit the cobbler’s shop. She imagines her life there with Mary Ann and with Jest entertaining the customers. She wonders if Jest might be her fate. They talk to Mr. Caterpillar, the cobbler, who tells them the Duke owns the building. Catherine and Mary Ann leave the shop. They talk about whether the Duke would lease the building to them and Mary Ann says that he would have to have the Marquess’s permission to lease the building to Catherine. Catherine decides to visit the Duke.
Catherine and Mary Ann go to the Duke’s estate. Catherine brings him a box of mini cakes. Catherine and the Duke greet one another and the Duke tells her that his estate is lonely. She begins to wonder if he is really aloof, or just shy. Catherine notices a bandage...
