Part 1, First Half, (Carl, Saul, Virginia, Carl) Summary

Carl and Kato are boring into the ice of Halley's Comet on the surface when the laser comes loose. The beam slices through Kato and Carl deactivates the apparatus to free him, but Kato is already dead. Umolanda joins him in his work afterwards, because the crew is on a quick schedule and has no time to mourn the loss of crewmen. Car checks the equipment they will need for the next stage of the work. Suddenly, he gets a signal that Umolanda is in danger, and recieves no response when he attempts to contact her. He disocers she was killed in an explosion while trying to recover an iron boulder. Mission Commander Miguel Cruz calls off work for two shifts, since the erros are being caused by fatigue.
