Summary
Philip tells Sharik to choose a name to be entered on his documents. Sharik decides to have Sharikov as his surname, and for his first and middle names, he chooses Polygraph Polygraphovich. Sharik chose the name from a calendar with the help of the house committee. Later, Shvonder brings Shariov’s officials documents to the apartment, and Philip signs them. Philip, Shvonder, and Sharikov then argue with one another about the exact implications and legal meanings of the documents, but the only thing on which they agree is that the documents certify that Sharikov is now a citizen. When Shvonder mentions that, as a citizen, Sharikov may be called upon to serve in the military if necessary, Sharikov exclaims that he will refuse to do so.
