Socioeconomic Bias
Hoover twists the idea of socioeconomic bias as she portrays Beyah as being biased toward rich people. Beyah believes the rich are shallow and lack empathy because they do not understand what it is like to be poor. Beyah judges her father instantly when she learns he has married into money. Beyah tags Sara as a snob before she ever meets her or has a chance to know her. When Beyah rescues the dog from the boys who are tormenting it, she believes the boys would not be so cruel if they knew how hard life could be.
