Summary

In “Artemis Victor vs. Andi Taylor,” Andi Taylor and Artemis Victor face off at the twelfth annual Daughters of America Cup at Bob’s Boxing Palace in Reno, Nevada. While fighting, Andi and Artemis each get lost in thought. Andi cannot stop thinking about the little boy who drowned at the community pool during her lifeguarding shift. She blames herself and keeps seeing his little blue leg when she pulled him out of the water. She tells herself to focus, or Artemis will beat her.

Artemis “is the youngest of the three Victor sisters,” all boxing champions (8). She wants to win because she wants to be better than her sister Star, and because her parents and journalists “from the local paper” and “from the Women’s Youth Boxing Association,” are watching (9). She stares at Andi, silently calling her ugly.
