Artt
Artt is one of the main characters of the novel. In “Monastery,” Artt arrives at Cluain Mhic Nóis with five other visitors. Artt is, however, the most esteemed of these guests. The narrator describes him through Trian’s lens in the following manner: “Scholar, priest, hermit, Artt is the most famous visitor to Cluain Mhic Nóis . . . From a clan of judges in the West, fostered out to a holy man at the age of seven—as soon as Artt knew more than his master, he sought out another, and another, but outshone them all” (4). Therefore, Artt’s reputation precedes him. The Cluain Mhic Nóis monks respect and are in awe of him because he has traveled to many places and studied with many different teachers.
