Chapters 7 and 8 Summary
Another letter to Charlie reveals Hattie's newest challenge — fence building. She is grateful that all of the materials necessary were stacked up behind the barn. November looms. There is little time for anything but work. She dons her work clothes and goes outside to continue where she left off the day before to find that nearly forty rods have been planted in her absence. She marvels again at the generosity of Karl and Perilee. When she heads back for dinner, strange sounds come from the barn. Leafie Purvis steps out to greet her. Leafie pulls out a trunk that Chester had asked her to set aside for Hattie. Their visit is interrupted when a group of men ride into the area, pushing a cow hard ahead of them.
