Johanna Parry
Johanna Parry is the central character of the story. Her personality is generally defined by a sense of efficiency and organization. She was born in Glasgow, Scotland, and moved to Canada when she was a child. She used to work as a housekeeper for an old woman named Mrs. Willets. After Willets’ death, Johanna began working as a housekeeper for a businessman named Mr. McCauley. She briefly met the husband of McCauley’s then-deceased daughter Marcelle. Johanna began a correspondence with Ken by mail, not realizing that the responses from Ken were actually being written by Ken’s daughter Sabitha.
When Ken appears to declare his love for Johanna in one of these letters, Johanna interprets the declaration as a marriage proposal. She buys a ticket to the small town where Ken is residing, and she pays to have the furniture owned by his deceased wife shipped...
