Parenthood

One of the main themes of this novel is parenthood. This theme is not about the relationship between the child and the parent, but the capacity of a person to be a parent. Paige is afraid to be a mother because her own mother ran away when she was only five. The memories of her mother that Paige has are not encouraging because her mother was quite unconventional in her parenting skills. Paige feels that she did not have a role model to follow in order to know how to be a good mother, although she did have a good father, who did all he could to make sure she had a good childhood.

When Paige learns she is pregnant with Max, she panics, because she had aborted a child. Paige feels she sinned when she had her abortion and will be punished for what she has done...
