Part 2, Growth, Summer 1993, Chapter 26, Nicholas Summary

Astrid opens the door of her home and finds Nicholas standing there with Max in his arms. Astrid allows him in, reaching for the baby and being rebuffed. Nicholas explains that he has come here because he feels he has no other choice. Nicholas has been unable to find reliable childcare, and he must return to the hospital that morning. Nicholas puts Max on the floor and asks his mother if she is busy. Astrid, who has a deadline on a book that has already passed, tells him she has nothing at all to do that day. Nicholas tells his mother about Paige, feeling as though he should defend her but unable to find the words.
