Paige drives through North Carolina and imagines the rolling hills and green fields look just as Ireland must. Paige wonders if perhaps her mother had this same thought when she came to North Carolina. Paige thinks about her mother as she makes the drive, remembering a time when May had wanted Paige to take the city bus after school to meet her at work. Patrick had told May it was too dangerous because Paige was too young. However, May defied her husband. May taught Paige the route she would have to take and told her not to tell her father.
