Nicholas is flying to Connecticut to retrieve a heart for an eighteen-year-old patient who has been on the waiting list most of his life. Nicholas has been making great strides in his career, doing bypasses without supervision any more and turning heads of the powers-that-be at Mass General. Nicholas is now, unofficially, the associate director of cardiothoracic surgery. As a consequence, he has few friends among his colleagues.
Nicholas and his team collect the heart in less than an hour and are back on the helicopter headed to Mass General. Nicholas falls asleep and dreams about a time when his mother and father are having marital problems. Robert Prescott takes his son to a ballgame, a rare treat that Nicholas always looked forward to.
