Chapters 1 through 5 Summary
A small ten-year-old boy named Yakov lives with the man he calls Uncle Misha. There is no blood relationship between Misha and Yakov or between them and any of the other three orphans living with Misha. The boys pick pockets, are sold for sex and do whatever else it takes for them to survive with Misha. One day a man named Gregor and a woman named Nadiya arrive and pay Misha for all the boys with promises that the boys will be adopted by families in the west. Nadiya takes the boys down to a waiting car while Gregor is supposedly obtaining Misha's signature, though he actually kills Misha.
In chapter two, a woman named Karen Terrio is in a horrific accident involving a drunk driver. Dr. Abbey DiMateo is among the interns working at Bayside Hospital and Karen's case falls...
