The Grain Fields
The novel's opening setting is the village's grain fields, where the villagers are finishing their annual harvest. While the villagers work there, the mood is open and jolly. On the day after the harvest, it is also where the villagers celebrate Gleaning Day, on which they are permitted to take fallen grain in the fields for their personal use to survive the winter. And toward the end of the novel, the fields are where Thirsk and Young Beldam plow the land one last time, before Master Jordan returns to turn it into a sheep farm.
The Woods
The woods on the outskirts of the village are where the trio of newcomers set up camp and where the villagers encounter them for the first time. It is also where Mistress Beldam takes refuge while her husband and father are imprisoned in the pillory. The woods provide shade...
