Summary
Thirsk meets with John Carr, who tells him that last night's entreaty to Master Jordan at the manor house did not go well. When Thirsk asks for more details, Carr seems suspicious, until Thirsk assures him that he is not "deceiving" (138) the rest of the village. Carr tells him that the rest of the community has learned from Master Jordan's steward, who answered the door at the manor house, that the new master will take over their land, and that the steward then told the villagers, "I hear that there is witchery about" (139). Lizzie Carr, Anne Rogers, and Kitty Gosse have all been judged to be "she-devils" and insinuated that they would soon be burned at the stake.
