In the past timeline, the Oyamas and Odile and Lillian all live in Manhattan's West Village, until Yuki's parents return to Japan. The office of the The Paper is also located in the Village. Lou lives in Queens, adding to the feeling of isolation Yuki feels while she is with him. Living with Lou, Yuki has to cross a river to return to the city, where things are more familiar to her. It is the 1960s and 70s, and New York is very artsy and bohemian, evidenced by Lou and his literary journal buddies who write abstract poetry and admire Jack Kerouac. In the present tense timeline, Jay, Mimi, and Eliot live in Brooklyn, above the art gallery that Jay and Mimi manage.
