Summary
In Part III, Chapter 6, Carney tracked Pepper down at a local bar. Though Pepper had been mad at him for the Munson issue, he agreed to help Carney with the Van Wyck situation.
One night, Pepper came to dinner at Carney's house. Elizabeth asked him a lot of questions. Pepper answered politely. She was able to get "more out of Pepper than Carney ever had" (281). By the end of the night, Carney was seeing Pepper differently. "He was a relative, this crook, part of his father's clan" (283).
In Chapter 7, Carney thought about his situation with Freddie while walking. He knew he did not have to get involved. Yet he also "wanted to prove that he could move a big rock" and "stick it to the rich bastards again" (285). Observing the city's recent changes, Carney noticed the ways it was divided.
