Summary
In Part III, Chapter 1, three years later, Carney and his family were living on Riverside Drive. Elizabeth's parents visited. They were no longer living on Strivers' Row. Carney's furniture store "continued to flourish in areas aboveboard, and below" (209). Over dessert, the family discussed the World's Fair.
Meanwhile, the city was in a state of upheaval. Protests were happening constantly.
While walking one day, Carney considered the city and the way things had changed. He preferred when the riots were calmer. Rioters ruined many local businesses.
One day, Freddie visited Carney. He looked unwell. He wanted Carney to hid a "leather briefcase" for him (217). He would not tell Carney what was in it, but begged him for help. Carney agreed. The shop was attacked several times. Carney wondered what he was doing.
