Summary
In Part I, Chapter 6, Carney and his family visited Elizabeth's parents. Leland installed an air conditioner for Elizabeth. Though Carney did not like being his in-laws, he liked their "place on Strivers' Row" (63). He hoped to provide a similar place for his family. The issue with Miami Joe and Chink complicated matters. No matter how he handled the issue, he saw something bad happening. During dinner, Elizabeth's parents talked about how well one of Elizabeth's old classmates, Alexander Oakes, was doing. Carney's mind drifted. A comment from Leland about Carney's father returned him to the present. Carney knew he was trying to embarrass him. Later that night, Freddie stopped by to tell Carney Arthur was dead (71).
In Chapter 7, when Pepper heard about Arthur's death, he visited Carney's shop. He made Carney drive him around in search of Miami...
