Summary

The narration shifts to the second person point of view as the reader assumes the position of a Lenape Indian. You walk the land that is familiar to you, the land that is your home. You know the animals, the scent of pine, and the way root bark can heal. Then a ship appears on the water and soon many more. You learn that the men are not kind. Meanwhile in your village children play and your women do their work. You hear the women talk. Then the men come closer. They raise their guns. For a long time, their stories will bury yours. Then, the narrative shifts and Haley remembered when Ms. Laverne asked them whom they would harbor. This is what she thought about when Amari angrily left the room following the argument over guns.
