Summary

In “Hurricane Season,” during the September 2018 hurricane, Florence, one of Hugh’s North Carolina houses was destroyed. Their other Emerald Isle home “was relatively unscathed” (56).

The following August, Sedaris, Hugh, and Sedaris’s sister, Gretchen, stayed at Hugh’s other beach house, the Pink House. Sedaris often invited family during the summer. Gretchen and Sedaris criticized the house’s name, which Hugh had chosen. Gretchen made a comment when Hugh acted offended.

Sedaris’s family often commented on Hugh’s short temperedness. Sedaris rarely defended Hugh, but knew that he loved him. They had been together for nearly 30 years. His temper was infamous and unpredictable, but he was not always this way with Sedaris. None of Sedaris’s siblings' partners were this way, but Sedaris did not really mind Hugh’s moods.
