Summary
Happy reads a newspaper article that says that every day there are several hundred trucks ferried with trash out of town. This makes him feel excited to work, since as long as there is trash, it would mean they could work and better their standards of living. Happy feels "that newspaper article dignified me," so he keeps it in his jacket. Happy always has bean curd with him to taste, and compares his habit to spiritual fulfillment, "like listening to music" (30). As he walks by the Lane Five Hotel, he notices that someone on the fifteenth floor is shining a mirror at him, making its light dance on him like a white butterfly. It is a smiling girl. Happy and Wufu often talk about women as if they are celestial beings. Wufu believes women should be fat with big breasts, like his wife...
