Claiborne County

Claiborne County is the primary backdrop for the narrative. This county is located in Virginia. It is also the region over which Sallie's father the Duke has control. He is not only "the biggest landowner in the county," but is also "chairman of the Claiborne County Democratic Party, meaning he decides who gets elected to what job" (38). For these reasons, all of Claiborne County is beholden to the Duke. In the wake of his, Eddie's, and Mary's deaths, Sallie finds herself assuming this position. Although she has many ideas about how to solve the county's troubles, she feels unsure where to begin. With time, she learns how to navigate the complicated dynamics of the region and to pursue peace and order.
