Summary
In Part III, Chapter 20, since Eddie’s death, Sallie has been unable to sleep. She blames herself for failing to protect him.
In Chapter 21, Sallie recalls the first time she met Mary. She visited the house shortly after Eddie’s birth. Mary told Sallie Annie was a witch who “cast a spell” on the Duke and stole him from Belle, the princess (153).
Mary comes to the Big House with her husband, Reverend Phillip Canon. She has inherited Kincaid Holdings and the house. She and Phillip move in. As devout Christians, they are determined to make Claiborne County “a law-abiding, God-fearing place” (157).
In Chapter 22, Mary and Phillip insist upon destroying the Emporium’s entire liquor inventory. Although Sallie disagrees, she helps, as she knows the laws are made by the people she now depends upon (163).
