Summary

In Chapter 9, Sallie convinces the Duke to give her Tom’s wheelman position. She becomes responsible for collecting rent and bills from tenants.

In Chapter 10, at the Emporium one day, Sallie meets Seymour, Sheriff Earl’s brother and Kat’s friend. He wants a job with the company. Sallie finds him charming.

Seymour comes for dinner. He steals the attention from the Duke. Even Eddie likes him.

In Chapter 11, per Kat’s suggestion, everyone “from the Big House,” plus Mattie, Sheriff, and Seymour, go for a picnic (82). “After an hour or so of frolicking,” the Duke suggests they jump “from the trestle” (85).
