Argentina
Argentina is the novel’s main setting. Tomás was born and raised in the town of La Plata. He eventually moved to Buenos Aires to attend college. Facts from Argentina’s turbulent history play a major role in the story, as the characters become involved in the conflict between the government and rebels. The novel occasionally alludes to the fact that political instability in Argentina has often been partly caused by unjust intervention by the United States.
Interrogation Center
Partway through the novel, Tomás acquired a job in a government interrogation center, in part to ensure his own safety from the government, and in part to spy for Montoneros. Tomás witnessed many atrocities such as torture, rape, and murder. He eventually flees the country for his own safety.
