Castle Rock, Maine is Gwendy’s fictional hometown. When she was 12-years-old, a man named Richard Farris approached Gwendy and gave her the button box. Gwendy returns to her hometown of Castle Rock when the box returns to her when she is an adult. At the time she is there, the residents of the town are being plagued by a man who has abducted three local girls.

Washington, D.C. is the town to which Gwendy travels for her job as a congresswoman. She remembers visiting Washington with her parents when she was a child, but she never dreamed she would work there. The day before Gwendy and the other members of Congress are supposed to leave for the holiday vacation, Gwendy is shocked and scared when she finds the button box in her office.
