Point of View
The memoir is told from Raina’s first person point of view as a graphic memoir. The memoir uses captions to tell the story from Raina’s perspective, written in squares with yellow background while Telgemeier also uses thought and word bubbles to show what Raina is actively thinking or saying. As Raina is often consumed with fears or anxiety about stomach problems, she often depicts Raina’s point of view as she plays out potential sickness or contagion. When this happens, Telgemeier depict her in green - either drowning, surrounded, small, or falling often with words outside of the caption or bubbles to look out of control. For example, when she first thinks she will vomit but does not on pages 22 - 23, Raina is depicted in green as grasping onto bathroom tiles and falling through the air. Or when Jane runs to the bathroom...
