Summary
In Part 1, Chapter 21, Metcalf goes to meet with Walter Surface, a private inquisitor whom Maynard Stanhunt had hired before hiring Metcalf. He arrives at Surface’s office, but Surface’s assistant says that Surface is at home. When Metcalf arrives at Surface’s apartment, he sees that Surface is an anthropomorphized ape. Surface is injured due to an attempt on his life, and he believes that Phoneblum might have been behind the attempt. Surface explains that, a few weeks ago, Phoneblum had hired Surface to monitor Celeste Stanhunt and see if she was having an affair. Phoneblum apparently hired Surface on Maynard’s behalf. Surface walked away from the assignment when Phoneblum and Stanhunt wanted Surface to kill the man with whom Celeste was having an affair.
