Summary
In Part 1, Chapter 8, Metcalf drives to the Bayview Motor Inn, which is the seedy motel in which Stanhunt’s murdered body was found. It was also the place where Celeste Stanhunt would sometimes go, likely to meet a secret lover. Metcalf wonders if the two facts are connected. He considers that maybe Stanhunt confronted the lover and was murdered. Metcalf show’s his private inquisitor’s license to the night manager—named Shand—who allows Metcalf to see the room where Stanhunt’s body was found. The night manager says that he does not know if the government inquisitors found a murder weapon. Shand goes back downstairs. After Metcalf surveys the room, he is confronted by an anthropomorphic kangaroo wielding a gun. The kangaroo says that his name is Joey Castle and that he is working for “Danny Phoneblum” (58) Joey threatens Metcalf, tells Metcalf...
