Mothers and Daughters
The novel explores the relationship between mothers and daughters in order to explore the grief and tragedy that comes when that bond is broken and the importance that memory plays in keeping the love for our parents alive after they are gone. The relationship between mother and daughter is shown to be the most important relationship a child can form, especially when there are only two members of a family, and when that bond is broken the child must search for a way to cope. Pearl and her mother are a cohesive unit for fourteen years, and their love for one another is the most important thing in Pearl’s life.
