Part V, Chapters Forty-Four through Forty-Nine Summary

In chapter forty-four, Mark is angry that his acquittal does not seem to exonerate him. In the months following the trial, the Archbishop moves his legal business elsewhere and the law firm is in trouble. Layoffs occur and several partners break out on their own to get away from Mark. Mark and Christina marry and there is tension between them as Christina's pregnancy advances. The tension reaches a peak one night and Christina says that she has found out that Mark lied, that Joe Avery had been transferred to Los Angeles on the spur of a moment rather than there having been a process in the works for months as Mark had initially said. Christina says that with that knowledge, it looks as if Mark intentionally worked to break up Joe and Christina...
