Summary
Owen and Alma went to the Daniel Boone National Forest to see the moonbow, a nighttime rainbow (194). While regarding the waterfalls, Owen and Alma talked about the past. Owen realized that most sights in Kentucky augmented his longing for elsewhere. Noticing how moved Alma was made Owen feel “in love with her” (197). He was overcome by nostalgia “for a past that wasn't even past yet” (197).
Owen learned that his story “A Place That Never Was” would be published in “a small literary journal” (199). He wanted Alma to read it, but she insisted on waiting until it was published. She then told him the English Department had offered her a tenure-track position (199). Owen was surprised she wanted to stay in Ashby. She explained her reasons for wanting to leave New York. They talked more about their relationship. Owen struggled to imagine their life together...
