Hvidovre Hospital

Hvidovre Hospital is one of the short story's primary settings. After M's accident, he stays at the hospital for over a month. While he is still in a coma, Caroline sits by his bed, observing his sleeping body, and contemplating their relationship and her emotions. Over the course of the weeks following, she spends an exorbitant amount of time in M's ward. She not only spends time with M and communicates with his doctors, but gets to know the other patients and their families. In the context of the hospital, Caroline later realizes, M's illness makes sense. However, once he leaves, M's condition feels jarring and dislocating.
