Summary

Shortly after the accident, the police officers gave Caroline M's coat in a plastic bag. She dug through the pockets, pulling out a series of small objects. They reminded her of past eras.

During his "first weeks" in the hospital, M mostly slept (3). Caroline studied his body. She knew he was somewhere else, and she was the only one in the room. She considered all the places from his past he might be traveling in his sleep. To him she "could be anybody" (3).
