Summary

The next chapter is titled “Lion-Dogs.” Hideki joins the others, and they stop within sight of their next obstacle, an American camp. Hideki knows they cannot stay here because there will inevitably be a fight between these Americans and the approaching Japanese, and they will be caught in the middle. They discuss possibilities. Again, Masako suggests using the grenade. Hideki argues against it, saying he cannot kill them all. They discuss other plans, such as trying to swim around. Masako suggests throwing the grenade from the beach, then running down the road while the Americans are turned toward what they believe to be a threat. Kimiko can tell Hideki has something to share and he struggles to find the words. He finally says this is not their fight, and that he does not want to fight either the Americans or the Japanese...
