Water
Water is a site of contradiction in the novel as it represents both destruction and creation. Water also represents cycles and repetition within the novel. Water is a central symbol of the novel as it is the key to the creation stories.
Dams
Alongside water, dams are a symbol of colonial control. They not only literally control water sources, but also negatively affect the Indigenous communities that rely on natural water sources and the land around it. The breaking of the dam symbolizes a return to Indigenous ways of life.
Cars
The symbol of cars in the novel represent colonial control over Indigenous autonomy. Cars literally embody freedom as characters can move freely with them. The four Indians steal the three cars to help break the dam. The names of the cars coincide with Spanish colonial ships: the Nissan (Nina), the Pinto (Pinta) and the Karmann-Ghia...
