Importance: The four Indians echo a sentiment earlier expressed by Norma. The first part— “Everybody makes mistakes”—is a common colloquial term to sympathize with someone who has made a mistake. Mistakes are normal and everyone will eventually make a mistake. The second part, however, adds a twist to the colloquialism. Though it is okay to make mistakes, some mistakes do have permanent consequences. This speaks to the larger themes of the book about colonialism and power dynamics. It is important that the stories we tell are carefully told, because telling the wrong story can have tangible consequences on communities, such as Western films.
